Bernie and Bec and their three sons live on this corner block in an outer suburb of Melbourne. Bec wanted to better screen her family’s living and sleeping areas from passers-by. She also wanted to retain the existing driveway and not impede access to it by vegetation. A variety of native small trees, shrubs and groundcovers have been selected to provide flowering interest throughout the year, including winter. These varieties are planted densely so that visitors must use the granitic sand path to access the house, thereby reducing compaction of garden beds. The plants in the so-called ‘Perfumed Pocket’ produce hard, woody fruit that will not stain the driveway or cars parked there. And a ‘secret’ fern garden has been included in front of the master bedroom for Bernie and Bec to enjoy!
